Insight Into The Technological Innovation Path of Permanent Magnet Aynchronous Motors.
Oct 20, 2025
Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), with their high power density and energy efficiency, have become an indispensable core power source for modern industry and life. However, behind their exceptional performance, multiple challenges, from raw material supply to control technology, are profoundly shaping their future development. Facing core challenges such as permanent magnet cost, high-speed control, and the risk of demagnetization, a global technological revolution is underway around PMSMs, driving their evolution towards a more economical, reliable, and intelligent future.
Despite its significant advantages, the development and application of PMSM also faces some challenges, which are also guiding the direction of industry technology development:
Permanent Magnet Cost and Supply Chain Risk
High-performance NdFeB permanent magnets are a major component of PMSM costs, and their price is significantly affected by market fluctuations in rare earth metals (such as neodymium, dysprosium, and terbium). Furthermore, the concentrated distribution of rare earth resources also introduces supply chain risks. To address this, the industry is actively researching:
Low-heavy rare earth/no-heavy rare earth permanent magnet materials: These reduce or eliminate the use of expensive heavy rare earth elements while maintaining high performance.
Permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motors (PMa-SynRMs): This compromise solution achieves a balance between cost and performance by optimizing magnetic circuit design, reducing the use of permanent magnets, and combining reluctance torque. These technologies have become a popular technology in cost-sensitive sectors such as home appliances.
Field Weakening Control and High-Speed Operation
When the motor speed needs to be increased above base speed, the back EMF continues to rise, necessitating the use of "field weakening control" technology to weaken the magnetic field and prevent overvoltage in the drive. Achieving stable and efficient field weakening control at high speeds is a key challenge in motor control system design.
Demagnetization Risk and Thermal Management
Permanent magnets are at risk of demagnetization under high temperatures and reverse magnetic fields. Once this occurs, motor performance will be permanently degraded. Therefore, an efficient thermal management system is crucial. The industry is working to develop better cooling methods (such as oil cooling) as well as more accurate thermal models and demagnetization monitoring algorithms.
Sensorless Technology
Traditional PMSMs require position sensors (such as photoelectric encoders and resolvers) to detect rotor position, but this increases cost, size, and potential for failure. Advanced sensorless control technology, which estimates rotor position within software algorithms, is maturing and finding widespread application in applications such as home appliances and fans, where cost and control accuracy requirements are moderate, improving system robustness.
The development of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) is an innovative path that continuously breaks through bottlenecks and balances performance and cost. From the exploration of low-heavy rare-earth magnets to the optimization of permanent magnet-assisted reluctance motors, from the refinement of advanced control algorithms to the widespread adoption of sensorless technology, each advancement has opened up new avenues for their application. It is foreseeable that with continued breakthroughs in these key technical bottlenecks, PMSMs will maintain their performance advantages while further enhancing their market competitiveness and continuing to lead the future of efficient electric drive technology.
