Capacitor Starting Motor
Jun 21, 2024
The starting winding of this type of motor is connected to the power supply through two capacitors, where the starting capacitor is connected to a centrifugal switch. During the starting phase of an electric motor, the starting capacitor can generate a very asymmetric magnetic field and a large starting torque. As the speed of the motor increases, the centrifugal switch opens, generating a moderate asymmetric magnetic field from the operating capacitor.
Shielded pole motor
The starting mechanism of this type of electric motor is to install a copper ring on a narrow section of the pole surface. This magnetic ring causes the magnetic field to become asymmetric, thus generating the necessary starting torque. The copper ring is installed in the upper left corner of the iron core. A covered pole motor has only the main winding and no secondary winding stage (starting winding). It has a pair of short-circuit rings at each pole of the motor stator, also known as electrode covered pole coils. After the electric motor is powered on, the pulsating magnetic field generated by the main magnetic pole induces a secondary current on the short-circuit ring, causing the magnetic field on the covered part of the magnetic pole to lag behind the magnetic field on the uncovered part. Therefore, the magnetic poles form a rotating magnetic field, and the motor rotor rotates to start working. Widely used in small household appliances such as electric fans, hair dryers, and vacuum cleaners.
In situations with high starting loads, capacitor starting (or capacitor running) motors or capacitor starting motors should be preferred for single-phase motor starting; Split phase motors are more versatile in terms of starting torque characteristics. Split capacitor motors and shielded pole motors can only be used in working environments with lower starting torque.
