Type of Motor

May 17, 2023

Nearly half of the world's power consumption is consumed by electric motors, so the high efficiency of electric motors is considered the most effective measure in solving the world's energy problems.

In general, it refers to the transformation of the force generated by the current flow in a magnetic field into a rotational action, and in a broad sense, it also includes a linear action.

According to the type of power supply driven by the motor, it can be divided into DC motor and AC motor. According to the principle of motor rotation, it can be roughly divided into the following types. (Except for special motors)

DC (direct current) motors can be divided into brush motors, brushless DC motors, and stepper motors.

Brush motor: The widely used brush motor is generally referred to as a DC motor.

The electrode, called the "brush" (stator side), contacts the "commutator" (armature side) once to switch the current and perform a rotating action.

Brushless DC motor: It does not require the use of brushes and commutators, but utilizes switching functions such as transistors to switch current and perform rotating actions.

Stepping motor: This motor works synchronously with pulse power, therefore it is also called a pulse motor. Its characteristic is the ability to easily achieve accurate positioning and operation.

AC (alternating current) motors can be divided into asynchronous motors and synchronous motors.

Asynchronous motor: AC makes the stator produce rotating magnetic field, which makes the rotor produce induced current and rotate under its interaction.

Synchronous motor: rotating magnetic field is produced at the AC point, and the rotor with magnetic pole rotates due to attraction. The rotation rate is synchronized with the power frequency.
